Reality Systems and Servers

So this is a description of my hardware, I enjoy building systems with older server hardware.  I am currently running the following systems.

Sense/NET

  • i5-8400 6 core 4Ghz
  • Debian 12
  • Plex, streaming services. Primary DNS and DHCP (Pi hole)
  • 16G DDR4
  • 22 TB of storage.

Sense/NET (sensenet) is my plex streaming server. It also runs a pi hole setup and is the primary DNS/DHCP server. since these are all the services that need the best uptimes, i thought it prudent to migrate them to their own box. Sense/NET was the multinational broadcasting and entertainment conglomerate that the crew invaded with the help of the Panther Modern’s  to steal the Dixie Flatline’s construct in Neuromancer.

Continuum

  • Intel Xeon e5-2697A v4 – 16 core 32 thread 3.6Ghz
  • Debian 12
  • KVM, Podman Containers
  • 160G Ram
  • 6 TB of storage

Continuum is my KVM virtual machine server. It’s named after Angie Mitchel’s AI in Mona Lisa Overdrive. Continuity has more than enough juice to run most things i can think of. These are the VMs currently running on Continuum. Aggregate usage is low so i can over provision a bit, and i certainly did, haha. All the VMs and other physical systems are named after characters in William Gibson’s novels Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

The Dixie Flatline

  • Remote desktop, general applications
  • Debian Sid
  • 4 cores
  • 16G Ram

The Dixie Flatline is named after McCoy Pauley, a mentor of Case who ended up dead and resurrected as an AI construct, he (it?) ended up helping Case run the virus program against TA.

Mona Lisa

  • Sketchy stuff
  • Debian 12 Bookworm
  • 4 cores
  • 8 G ram

Named after the titular character from Mona Lisa Overdrive, she’s a torrent box and downloader.

Molly

  • Database server
  • MS SQL Server 2019
  • Windows Server 2022
  • 4 Cores
  • 16 Gb Ram

Molly is my favourite character from all Gibson’s novels, tough, deadly, beautiful, and complex. I don’t know why she hasn’t starred in a movie yet.

Hideo

  • Apache 2.4.x, WordPress, Webmin, MariaDB, Guacamole
  • Debian 12
  • 6 cores
  • 16 Gb ram

This is this very web server, named after the ninja who guarded Lady 3Jane, the one that killed Peter after Peter holographically lasered his eyes. The software used to build this site consists of:

  • WordPress
  • Apache Guacamole
  • Nextcloud
  • SearxNG
  • Cockpit

Most of these services are for logged in users only, I like that the whole stack, right down to the hardware is FOSS. Hideo, like most of these machines are VMs running on KVM and libvirt on Continuum. Full stack. I love it.

  • Debian 12
  • Apache 2
  • MariaDB
  • Python

Wintermute

  • Workstation, development, Games
  • Windows 10 Education
  • KVM Virtual Machine
  • 8 cores
  • 16G Ram

These are the rest of the physical systems in the house. None are powerhouses, but all do their jobs well. I currently think that 6th Gen Intel, or 1st gen ryzen systems have a lot of life left in them.

Neuromancer

  • Workstation, development, General usage
  • Xeon e5-2697A v4
  • 16 cores 32 threads
  • 32G Ram
  • Debian 13

One of the two AI’s at the center of Neuromancer, It’s always my my main Linux box. It’s currently running a ridiculous e5-2697a ver 4, but that will be changed to a e5-1680 ver 4 as soon as i can find one.

Maelcum

  • Dell 5040 SFF
  • 16G Ram
  • i5-6500
  • Retro games, home theatre PC, music and video calling
  • Debian 13

Cherry Chesterfield

  • Dell D10U Mini PC
  • 8G Ram
  • i5-6500T
  • Pi Hole DNS and DHCP
  • Debian 13
